“Woe is me” and other lies I tell myself!

by on November 9, 2011

How often do you stop to notice what the voices in your head are saying?  You know the ones I’m talking about… they’re the ones that moved in when you were a kid (sometime between the ages of 0-7) whenever you had a certain experience that made you believe the world was a certain way?

Like when you overheard your dad say that “Money doesn’t grow on trees” or that “Everybody has to work doing things they don’t enjoy.  It’s just the way it is” or when your mum told you to “Stop showing off” perhaps?

As part of my process on the “Mindset of a Lifestyle Entrepreneur” course which is part of the Feminine Way to Wealth programme I’m doing with my (millionaire female lifestyle entrepreneur) mentor Dr Joanna Martin I’ve been examining the limiting beliefs that sabotage my business efforts right now and have meant that if I’ve either not made enough money but had lots of time OR I had lots of money but NO time!… I have to say, it’s been a real eye opener!

Going along with a lie

Take the following as an example – I’ve been inundated with joint venture opportunities lately, I have literally a pad FULL of ideas for great products that I’m about to create and I can see my way through the restructuring process now.  I can see how I can take my business, help more people find their authentic business voices, help them to build their stories and personalities into their content strategy and ultimately, create movements with social media… but to do it for MORE people, earn more money as a result and to leverage my time and get to do the things I love every day too!

I’m sure there are a lot of folks out there who would like to make the kind of money I’ve made for my clients in the last 12 months but who, until now I’ve not been able to help because there’s only one of me… I’m sure there are lots of mums to be, new mums or people who’ve been bankrupt or on benefits like me who would like to know exactly how I turned that around and created a high 4 figure monthly income within 12 weeks with social media too… but until now I’ve not seen a way to really give them access to that information.  NOW I do!  So… surely I should be over the moon and delighted right?

Not so.  Instead I’m feeling pressured, pulled in too many directions, stressed, as though I wish people would just leave me alone… and then today I gave myself a shake (actually I went for a walk in the rain) and realised it was those voices in my head trying to sabotage my efforts again!  The subconsious mind tries to keep you safe – it’s not some evil thing that’s out to get you.  You’ve got the limiting beliefs you have for a reason – you know not to touch that flame because it’s hot, you know not to jump off that cliff because… well… you’ll die… and in my case I ‘know’ that making money should be a struggle because ‘it doesn’t grow on trees’ and ‘people aren’t to be trusted’ and ‘we all have to do things we don’t want to do to make ends meet’.

None of that is true though.  I know it in my CONSCIOUS mind… so right now I’m learning to hear those voices, thank them for their concern and then to smile, realise that I’m blessed and KEEP ON MOVING forwards! :)

It’s important for us to be mindful of our thoughts because, it’s true that thoughts become things!  Are your thought patterns mostly limiting or empowering?  It’s worth thinking about because whatever you spend your time thinking about will effect your decisions and the decisions you make today will create your future!  If you’re in a state of fear you can’t be in a state of love at the same time.  You can’t grow…

Shake it off!

If you catch yourself thinking negatively during the day, try these strategies for getting yourself back into an expansive and open state:

  • Stop what you’re doing and think about what it was that triggered the negative thought.  What’s the root of that negative thought?  Do you know?  Is it that you believe everything has to be hard because that’s what someone told you when you were a child?  Is it that you have to be brilliant at everything you do because that’s how you get love and affection and so you put way too much pressure on yourself to perform to a high standard (which is assessed by YOU with the same limiting beliefs acting as filters through which you view your life by the way!!)?
  • Look around you at notice the things that you are grateful for in your life.  Your partner?  Your children?  Your cat!  Your home.  Having food in the fridge!  A pillow to lay your head on.  Somewhere beautiful to go for a walk each day. Whatever it is we ALL have things to be grateful for!  When we were homeless with our son I remember thinking about how grateful I was that I had such a beautiful, loving family… I truly believe that this is why I started attracting such incredible opportunities.  Because I was in a state of gratitude, giving out positive energy.
  • Get out and go for a walk!  Reconnecting with nature ALWAYS sorts me out!
  • Smile at yourself.  Thank your subconscious for trying to keep you safe… and start seeing things for what they REALLY are!
  • If all else fails, 10 star jumps shouting “Yippee!” as loud as you can tends to banish feelings of negativity for at least 30 minutes!! :)
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this post folks!
Perhaps you could leave me a comment and if you’re feeling really generous I’d just LOVE it if you’d share it with anyone you think might enjoy it too!
As always I’d love to chat with you on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ so do come and say hi!
