The Time of the Month! Are We Missing Something Here?

by on November 15, 2011

It’s that time of the month for me again – Aunty Flo has come to visit and as a result I’m realising exactly why I’ve had a few teary emotional outbursts in the last few day… why I’ve been a teeensy bit difficult to be around and why I’m now experiencing a TOTAL SLUMP in my productivity levels!

I read an article by Dr Joanna Martin recently which I found very interesting.  You can find that article by clicking here if you are interested in reading it too by the way.  It’s called Hormones, Havoc and Women in Business.

It talks about the fact that in times gone by, in traditional communities at this time of the month a woman would retreat to the “Moon Lodge” or the “Red Tent” during her menstruation.  In some communities a woman was considered to be at the very height of her power during this time, and because of that it would be made possible for her to spend time listening to her inner voice in order for her to hear suggestions and wisdom which would then benefit her whole tribe.

Are We Missing Out on a Bit of Wisdom Here?

The question I have for you today is; while we’re busy running around, running our businesses and taking care of our children and NOT spending any time to retreat and listen to our inner wisdom, could we be keeping back essential insights and messages that would benefit our tribe?

Think about it – if ALL the women in the world retreated during the time of the month and came back to their families and communities with the wisdom that their inner voice had given them… collectively – what difference would that make in the world?  In this very male dominated world that we live in – what difference would this make?

I can hear my husband’s response to this right now!  Lol!  He’d say that the house would be more peaceful and we’d not have nearly as many arguments for a start!  But what else?

You know, I’ve heard very successful entrepreneurs talk about the fact that their greatest ideas and inspiration have come to them while they’ve been on holiday – during down time.

What if we as women could take this down time each month?  What ideas and inspiration would that result in?

His Holiness The Dalai Lama

Let’s not forget that The Dalai Lama himself said that “The western woman will save the world”… could this be a way for us to do that?

Personally, I’m a complete believer in a woman’s power as a creator – we’ve all got the genes of creators even if we have never had children after all!  What if we tapped into this more often?

I personally can see lots of benefits to this – not least of all – MORE CHOCOLATE and DUVET DAYS!  Yay!  But in all seriousness, what difference do you feel it would make in your personal life, and in the world if women honoured this time more and retreated to our very own version of the red tent?

But We’re All TOO Busy!

I don’t know about you but I’m going to give this stuff a go.  Ok, there’s no way I can take a week off every month (yet!) but there are things we can all do take some time out and ‘listen’ right?

Retreating in the 21st Century – a few suggestions:

  1. Relax in a candle lit bubble bath (chocolate / wine optional)!  It’s rarely truly quiet in my house so I tend to close my eyes and put my ears under the water to block out some of the sound!  Very womb like! :)
  2. Retreat to bed early and with the extra time in bed maybe listen to a guided meditation or some relaxing music to help you tap into the messages coming from inside you?
  3. Take a walk on your own somewhere beautiful and just allow yourself some time to process your thoughts!
There are always things we can do to take  a little time out – even in the middle of a busy day.  I’m learning this more and more myself… and in case up to now you’ve been telling yourself that it would be self indulgent to do so… why not take a leaf out of the history books and give it a go?  Because it may just benefit the whole planet!
Hey… let’s just re frame this right now!  It’s our DUTY to retreat during the time of the month ladies!  We’ve got a world to save after all!

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Hi Michelle I am very interested in what you have to say about the time of the month.
I believe it is very true that our bodies are trying to tell us very important things at this time and if we don’t listen then we are missing out on some very valuable wisdom. We may also be storing up problems for later on. Dr Christiane Northrup an American gynaecologist suggests that problems with PMT and later on the menopause are linked to not dealing with our ‘issues’, our bodies have to send us louder and louder messages in order to get us to listen! I think we all need to put ourselves further up our lists for these few days a month and try to tune in to what our bodies have to say.

PS The Red Tent is a very interesting book, well worth a read, maybe in the bath!

Thanks so much for your comment Brenda! Have you heard about my reading in the bath adventures? I read Guy Kawasaki’s book Enchantment in the bath in one sitting and was rather wrinkled afterwards! Maybe I’ll go for another on your recommendation! :)
